[He slowly withdraws his hands. And... it almost feels like faint tug.]

Yeah, I... I feel it. I think. It's kind of faint, but - oh. I think I lost it.

[Well, still not too bad for a start.]

Then you've gotta try it again. Hands back on the metal.

[Aang gives a diligent nod and puts his hands back on the metal, with a stronger focus. He has a better idea of what to feel for this time, so he's able to feel the impurities a bit quicker.]

Okay... I can feel it again.

Okay. This part might be easier to me because I'm used to seeing earth with my bending all the time. But you've really got to visualize it. Not only see those impurities with your hands, but with your mind, too.

Sorry. I guess I haven't been practicing that enough. But I'll... I'll try.

[He closes his eyes and focuses his mind, trying to attach the earthiness to his mind. And he slowly removes his hands.]

I think it's a better feel this time...

Good. That's the key to this whole thing--being able to see the impurities with your mind, and then move them. I think a demonstration is in order.

[He glances back on Toph.]

Sure!

[She cracks her knuckles and sets another one of the metal slabs against a tree trunk. She raps on the metal first, before grabbing it at the top with each hand and renting it in two.]

[He takes a careful observation of her movements.]

That was really great!

[She sweeps her hands.]

Of course it was! And what did you notice about how I handled the metal?

You tapped it first.

Mmhmm. You've always gotta know what kind of metal you're dealing with, because they're all composed differently. And what about the actual movement?

Um... you used both of your hands, and it just... ripped real quickly!

[Well, that's true, but...]

It didn't exactly look like the earthbending you're used to, did it?

Right! You tore it instead of making it a different shape.

Uhuh. Metal can be moved and ripped and crunched, but you can't turn it into a new shape like you can with earth--you know, not that I've discovered yet, anyway. [She grins.] So the forms are obviously gonna be different, too.

I get it. So it'll be a lot to learn. Not that that's a bad thing!

That's right! Even when you figure out how to bend one kind of metal, you've got to apply yourself when trying to bend other kinds. That's just how it goes.

I understand. [He looks back to the metal.] So what should I try next?

[She ponders this for a moment.] Try hitting the metal, and see if you can make a dent in it. Not with your strength, but with your bending.

Sure!

[He focuses for a moment and then strikes at the metal, trying to hit it in a similar way as earth - and focusing on the earth he sensed in the metal. He pulls back his hand with a little pain in his fingers... but left behind on the metal is a slight and partial imprint of his strike.]

Well? That's a start. [She steps up to the metal to feel exactly what kind of marks he left.] You've got to treat it entirely different than throwing a punch, though. Because you're not hitting the metal--you're moving it with your fist.

[He steps to the side as Toph examines it and nods along.]

Alright. I think I have a better idea now of what I should be doing.

Want to try it again, then?

[He makes a determined nod.]
