And so it was that a mildly freaked out and increasingly worried Katara went to meet Aang by the bridge.

And she waited.]

[And soon enough, Aang approched the bridge, riding that ball of air that he called an air scooter. He looked cheery despite feeling somewhat uneasy about Katara's sudden message. Was something up with that Tobi guy? He seemed really friendly. Aang hopped out of the air scooter several yards from Katara and calmly strolled up to her. And he says]

Hey! What's going on?

[Katara immediately straightens from where she had been leaning on the bridge railing and looks Aang over. He seems safe and fine, and some of the tension leaves her shoulders.]

Hey, thanks for meeting me so quickly.

[That's not a smile, Katara. Oh well.]

No problem, Katara. [He could tell something was bothering her even more in person.] What's wrong?

That guy you were talking to... I'm sorry I didn't tell you right away. I thought that Shikamaru might want me not to tell people, but you need to know. He's not a good guy, Aang.

Tobi? But he seemed really nice! Weird, yeah, but he kinda reminded me of good ol' Bumi. If he's not good, then what kinda of guy is he?

The kind of guy it's best to stay away from. [She sighs and looks away from him for a moment, towards the river.]

Sometimes people come here from different worlds, and they've done... really horrible things on their world. They're incredibly powerful. But as long as they don't have a reason here, they won't try to hurt anyone. And Tobi is someone who has done terrible things on his world - he's not at all as foolish as he appears. But by staying away from him, and not breaking his cover, the people from his world are hoping that he'll just keep acting like that.

[She looks back to Aang.]

But he's really dangerous, so it's better to stay away from him.

[Aang is worried by this revelation.]

I'm an idiot... I told him almost everything about me. I'm the Avatar and I can't even tell who's who around here.

I won't talk to him anymore, Katara. [However, a thought occurs to him.] But if he tries to reach me again and I ignore him, won't that provoke him?

I've been fooled a couple of times about who's who here too, Aang. It's not always easy, especially over the journals. [She sighs a little.] And... I don't know what to tell you about that. Talking with him over the journals could be fine, you just shouldn't meet him anywhere. And we can talk with Shikamaru and see what he thinks.

[Faith in her friend? Oh yes.]

Still, I should know better by now. I'm supposed to be the Avatar. What would I do without you to keep me out of trouble, Katara? [He smiles fondly as he leans on the bridge.] At least he doesn't know I'm the Avatar or what that means. Maybe Shikamaru could help, he's cool.

[This is a level of praise to which she is no longer accustomed and isn't sure she deserves.]

If I was doing a good job, I would have told you about Tobi when you first got here.

[It is also a level of praise Aang has grown used to dispensing regularly.]

It's not your fault, Katara. I'm the one who talked to him, and I'm the one who should have known better by now. You and Sokka have already helped me a lot with settling in and warning me about the Malnosso.

No, Aang, stop saying that. The last time I checked being the Avatar didn't give you magical murdering psychopath sensing abilities. I'll just have to make sure to let everyone know to avoid Tobi in the future, that's all.

You're right. That would be helpful. [He pauses] Maybe I can help warn people too. You shouldn't have to do all this yourself.

I don't know if warning everyone to stay away is the best idea, but... definitely everyone in the house. Besides, before we do anything, we should talk to Shikamaru.

[She puts her hand on Aang's shoulder.]

It'll be okay, Aang.

[The simple, warm touch helped to remind Aang of what he had left back home. He had decided he would be fine with this reversion to friendship for now. Still, little moments like this were starting to make him miss the way things were.]

Thanks. That sounds fine, Katara. Shikamaru knows more about this guy, and Sokka's good with plans. Something good has to come from all of us putting our heads together.

[Katara slid her hand off Aang's shoulder and nodded, although she's pretty sure she knows exactly what Sokka would say about this anyway. He wasn't exactly fond of her ninja friends.]

Let's see if he's around.

[She reached for her own journal and constructs another private filter.]

Shikamaru?

Here.

[It's a prompt response. He has a feeling he knows what this is about.]

Hey, we need to talk. Meet me by the middle bridge?

On my way, though I'm pretty far out. It might be a bit.

[So. If you don't like standing around awkwardly and want to change locations or something.]

[Katara glances at Aang.]

Do you want us to meet you halfway?

[Aang nods at her in approval.]

If you'd like. I should be at the rec center in fifteen minutes or so.

All right, we'll see you there.

[She shuts the book.]

Come on, Aang. I think you'll like the rec center.

[Katara's only been there like, three times in two years, but she still thinks he'll like it.]

Sure! You think so?
