[OH I SEE HOW IT IS WHEN SHE ACTS UP THAN SHE'S HIS DAUGHTER
Katara you're the one who will actually be there teaching her as she grows up oh no ma heart
It is kind of weird to hear about, but it doesn't feel as weird as he thinks it should. Maybe it's the way Katara broke it to him, or the way she seems to be calm and smiling, but Aang seems perfectly fine. He chuckles a little with her.]
No, no... It doesn't really feel that weird. It feels... [He places a hand over his chest.] ...nice. The way you talk about her, Katara, I know the world's gonna be in great hands one day.
[ katara pauses, before she wrinkles her nose a little and sort of shrugs. ]
Or, well... I mean, it would be, if we were on it? Oh, you know what I mean.
[ she seems to consider something for a moment, and then abruptly takes a sip from her cup. telling him about, well. tenzin... and all that.... can probably wait, right? ]
I... I know what you mean. Thank you, Katara. [He frowns slightly as he thinks about it. Time's supposed to be frozen back home, true. But there was still no guarantee that they'd get back home to build that lovely future. Except that Katara's there. And ever since he met her, he's been able to find ways to do the impossible.
He tries to reach across the table for her hand and looks right into her eyes.]
We're gonna be on it again. And then the world'll be back in all of our hands. I just know it, Katara.
[ katara seems a little surprised, briefly freezing when aang takes her hand and looks at her with that conviction. she goes a little red and tries to push past the sudden embarrassing feeling of being completely tongue-tied, before she turns her hand to take and squeeze his and nods in affirmation. ]
[As he said that, he really did believe it. And he had remembered all the times that Katara had helped him out through his struggles in the past. He was glad to take his turn in helping her out. Still, his cheeks flush a little as she squeezes his hand back. The way she supports his words makes him feel so much stronger.]
Great. I... I'm glad you agree! [He lost track of his sentence, so his smile takes a turn for the goofy.]
[ wow, uh, she lost track of herself for a second there, too, and she feels her face heat up again when she finally pulls her hand back. jeez, aang, she missed you when she was in paradisa. :( he'd been the one part of the gaang who'd never really showed up at all. maybe that's why she's so eager to keep the positive momentum of this conversation going. ]
Korra was learning airbending from another airbender, you know. I'm - [ going to tell a little while lie.. ] - not really sure who he was, or where he came from, I didn't really ask, I'm sorry. But that's something to look forward to, too, right?
[So much gladness going on! This is coupled with a swarm of spider-butterflies that are swarming in Aang's stomach, even as she pulls her hand away. He slowly pulls his hand back a little bit as she speaks. One of his last memories with her was that whole debacle at the play, so he's learned his lesson about being careful at her.
But her latest revelation catches him completely off-guard and brings things to a screeching halt. He exclaims blankly.]
Wait, wait, hold on.
[And then, after a moment, he goes on with a tone of incredulous disbelief... mixed with uncertain hope.]
[ maybe she should have started with this... instead of the whole 'i met your reincarnated future self' thing, because even if aang is the avatar, she imagines that no one really likes to imagine himself as dead.
so possibly this will be hard to explain away. but it's also possible that the hope in his voice alone more than justifies that for her. ]
That's what Korra said, at least, and... well, I can't really think of a good reason she'd have for lying to me about it.
[ yeah no she feels you friend. katara shrugs slightly, glancing away as she does, and is doing her very, very best impression of someone who is completely casual and doesn't know more than she may be possibly letting on. ]
Korra didn't really say, but... if you have a family someday, some of them might be airbenders, right?
Yeah, I do. I mean... someday. A long time from now, obviously, but - yeah.
[ because it's still a sort of terrifying thought, but it's a slightly terrifying thought that katara has had a lot of time to think about. mostly, it means that warmth in his voice gets a soft and sincere smile out of her, because - well. even if it wouldn't be for a long (long, long) time, it meant that hope really was there. better yet, hope and real possibility. ]
Of course it is. This is really big! [He smiles warmly, radiating emotion. For some reason, he really likes sharing this with Katara more than anything. He might even be on the verge of getting a little choked up.]
I'm gonna have my own family, Katara. With... with more airbenders! Even if it's when I'm really old and crusty, I know I'm gonna be happy.
I'm... I'm glad. I know that whatever they're like, they're gonna love you, Katara. I'll make sure they spend a lot of time having fun with you! It'll be great. [He's hung up on the general idea of family and having children that he hasn't even thought about one certain component: a mother.]
We could even all go penguin-sledding together! Won't that be fun?
[ ha ha that's one aspect katara hadn't forgotten when she'd been drilling korra about the future, but. right. there's a place and a time, and she is almost positive that it's not now. ]
So.... can you believe Sokka's a captain? I'm proud of him.
[He's almost lost in the day-dreaming, but hearing about Sokka brings him back to the present. It's not the same as new airbenders, but he gives a bright smile about Sokka nonetheless.]
Yeah, me too! He always seemed very... leader-y. So I guess it makes sense! He must have a lot of neat adventures.

Baby airbenders... [He utters incredulously to himself. The possibility is gigantic. He could help there be airbenders again.]
