Book 14: Autumn Breeze

[The day is off to a normal start for Aang, starting with airbending practice. He also spends some of the morning using airbending to play around with the leaves on the front lawn of House 56.

After school, he then spends some time cooking at the bakery. He puts together a mix of cookies, cupcakes and some fruit pies of different flavors, and anyone can pop in while he's working on that. He leaves some at the bakery and takes the rest to the Welcome Center, where he sets them up as treats for visiting New Feathers. He spends some time lingering there to do what Welcome Center-ing work there is to be done. And before heading home for dinner, he takes Appa out for a ride flying in the air over Luceti.]

[While Aang's at the Welcome Center, he sets up a video. The treats he prepared are visible on a table in the background. Those who met him during the last experiment can probably pick up over the video that he now looks 15-ish rather than 12, although it's easier to tell the difference in person.]

Hello. How is everyone? It's Aang here, and I've got a few things I wanted to say. First of all, isn't it great that it's autumn now? That's like the best time of the year! Does anyone know any fun things you like to do in autumn? I'd like to try out all kinds of new things.

I... also wanted to say something about the way I was a few weeks ago. When I was littler again. I lied and told some of you I wasn't the Avatar, but I really am. I'm sorry about that. [He pauses for a moment.] Other than that... I left some treats out in the Welcome Center to help greet any New Feathers! If you have any questions about this place, one of us there will do our best to help you. I know lots of things can be confusing and unfamiliar in this place. Come to think of it... Is it just me, or is this New Feather cycle going on longer than usual?

[It's the smell that attracted Eley first - the smell of fresh baked goods again. There seemed to be a lot of baking going on lately... not that the Spirit was complaining.

Naturally he decides to investigate the source of said smell and realises that it's coming from the bakery. Of course! Eley hadn't been there for a while now... not since that strange turn of events when he found himself working there as someone quite different from himself.

While it was a little strange to be visiting again since then, the smell was too good to ignore, so Eley steps inside. It's there he finds that Aang is the one making these goods... leading to a rather awkward moment where Eley will just stand and watch and wonder exactly how to approach him after their last meeting.

[Aang doesn't really feel awkward himself - he's as friendly and cheery as ever as he pokes up from behind the counter.]

Hello, Eleytheria! How are you today?

[Eugene's pretty sure he's got this journal thing figured out. Except not. He's largely out of focus and he has the camera tilted at a really weird angle.]

Yep! [Aang tilts his face a few times to try to make sure he's looking at this guy right.] If you don't know what it means, than you probably are one!

[The introduction catches Don's attention, but replying to it seems kind of awkward. He hesitates a while, then goes for the straightforward.]

Um... hi. My name is Donatello and someone called Iroh said I should talk to you.

Hey - Donatello! [He does remember seeing him once, but that was almost a year ago now.] Iroh sent you? What's the matter?

Master Aang? ( She is clearly choosing her words carefully. ) What does being the Avatar entail?

You can just call me Aang. And being the Avatar? It's kind of a special duty in the world. Only the Avatar can learn all four of the elements and has to act to keep balance in the world. And to act as the bridge between man and spirits.

[Of course the scent of pies draws the attention of Iroh, who has been enjoying the new foods of this world]

Ah, there always seems to be baked goods around this place.

[He'll just be helping himself, thank you]

[He gives a pleased smile as Iroh enters, while he wipes his hands off behind the counter.]

That's right! Even we air nomads have to be busy, sometimes. But it's still in a fun way!

[Most of the pies are made air nomad-style, although there's a few based on recipes from other worlds.]

[Could Aang picked a better day to satisfy a hungry Saiyan's stomach? Might not want Vegeta to take all the goodies, of course...

He walks into the bakery because man, that smells good, eyeing the lot of food that Aang's working on. His eyes go from Aang back to the food, back to Aang, and then back to the food, silently waiting.

He wants some.]

[Aang looks over with a smile and wearing a pink apron.]

Oh! Vegeta, it's you! Want some goodies?

[Well, Aladdin's been keeping to himself since he got back from his first Mallynap, but boredom quickly overcomes sullen-ness and he finds himself browsing the journal looking for something to do.

He recognizes Aang from their brief encounter at the grocery store, but he has a little trouble following what he said.

Well, it's as good a time as any to strike up a conversation- he liked this Aang guy anyway, and man was he bored sitting up in his apartment- so after a little fiddling, he remembers how to video]

"Hi Aang, nice to see you again."

[Okay, polite conversation, don't be intrusive, be tactful and deli-]

"Uh, what's an Avatar?"

Hey Aladdin! It's good to here from you, too. [He had wondered how his new friend was doing but hadn't tried to contact him.]

Oh, and the Avatar is what I am! In my world, only the Avatar can learn to bend all four of the elemtents. We're supposed to keep balance in the world and make sure things are okay with all the spirits.

[ voice ]

It's not that it's going on longer than usual, Aang. It's more that they may have decided to change how often they'd send them in, considering the recent change at the head of the Organization. We could get no arrivals next month, but... that might remain to be seen. It's almost the start of a new cycle year...

So... Just like that, things might wind up being completely different?

[Suki just happens to be around when Aang is playing with those leaves. For awhile, she just watches him, laughing. He looked like he was having fun, and Suki could appreciate that.]

Trying to make a leaf sculpture?

Maybe! Or, now that you're here, I could try...

[He swishes some leaves around so they softly descend to the top of Suki's head in a circle.]

[She's still not certain where she stands with Aang after her announcement in August. It had been easier back during that last shift. At least, it had been easier with him. The twelve year old boy that made her smile with his innocence, much like the fifteen year old once had with his optimism. But that had been before she had ruined it.

She should just leave him alone entirely. Go in the bakery, grab her loaf of bread, and leave without saying a word. Let whatever friendship had existed between them drift away.

But she's selfish. She's horribly selfish. And she misses those friends she had once tried to push away. She walks closer to the counter, wanting to get a better look at the foods he's made.]

They look good.

[In some ways, Aang still is uncertain about what to think of Katniss. But one thing he is certain of, is that he's not going to give up on her. Seeing her through her younger eyes was refreshing, in a way - it helped him to remember the person he befriended before he learned all of those things.

So he gives her a friendly smile.]

I bet they taste good, too! Try one, Katniss.

It's still going on? Aren't we supposed to get a month off from that?

We usually do! But lots of people have been coming in the last few days. Raine's saying it might be because of the Malnosso making changes! I'm not sure what to think.

But - I had Katara and Sokka convinced the first time we met! But... That's besides the point. Whether or not I'm good at it, it's the fact I lied that counts.

[ Airbending play with leaves? It's like a siren song to his granddaughter, who runs out from the house and immediately sets about trying to catch one. ]

Grandpa grandpa grandpa grandpa! Guess what!

[Aang immediately giggles and twirls his finger around to keep one leaf just out of her reach - but then brings another to a soft landing on her nose.]

Um... You're cute as a button?

[Those are some delicious smells wafting out of the bakery today. Not that the bakery doesn't usually smell delicious, but Emil is hungry enough that stopping in on the way back from the store seems like an excellent idea.

He's a little surprised by who he finds inside, though.]

Oh, hi Aang! I didn't realize you worked at the bakery too.

Hey Emil! [He says as he sets up some oatmeal cookies.] Yeah, I've been working here a few months. [He starts subbing after Rapunzel got her hair cut and wound up becoming a regular worker there.] You up for some snacks?
