Book 1: Fresh Water [Video]

[Aang is peering into the journal so his face takes up almost the entire screen. He begins shouting into the book as abruptly as his image appears]

Hey! What am I doing here? I'm Aang! I'm an Airbender. Does anyone know what's going on here? I can't find my friends, my clothes or any of my stuff! I thought I was on my sky bison with everyone else going to see the Earth King. Now I'm here. Have anyone of you book people seen anyone I know?

[Aang has pulled away from the journal but continues talking as he sits in a patch of grass.]

This is a really weird place. But kinda peaceful. Definitely not weird enough to be the Spirit World. What is going on here?? And... have I always had these wings?

[Aang lifts up the book with one hand, squinting and examining it like some foreign object. This results in the picture showing his quizzical face from a skewed angle.]

What's an Airbender? If I may ask.

Hi Yui, nice to meet you! What kind of place is this? I still don't really get it.

You don't know what an Airbender is? I... we're people who can use and master the element of air. We can glide and everything! It's a lot of fun!

It's...hm, well it's a village for starters, and the people who run this place are called the Malnosso. They're a bunch of scientist who protect us, but also do weird things on us too...but whatever they do, the weird stuff doesn't last for very long. [She adds at the end as reassurance.]

Ohh, like sky gliders back home? I don't think they call themselves Airbenders though...or even the sky divers either.

Really? I wonder if they'll turn me into a badger mole or maybe a platypus bear. As long as I get turned back... that sounds pretty fun!

Sky gliders? What are they like?

Eh? Badger mole and platypus bear...?

Oh they're people who use hang gliders to glide through the air. They're these special air crafts that uses the wind to fly through the air--Er glide. Sometimes they have motors too, but there aren't a lot of those.

Yeah! They're both really cool animals!

[More like those guys at the Northern Air Temple than Aang's people.]

Oh. They sound pretty cool I guess.

I've seen a badger, a mole, platypus and bear, but not a badger mole or platypus bear. Do they really look like two animals in one?

They're fun to watch gliding through the sky! But I don't think I'd have the courage to try something like that.

That's a weird way of saying it. It's more like you're talking about single animals split in half.

It's too bad. It's one of the most fun things you could do, along with riding a cool animal. Lots of things that seem scary are actually really fun, like gliding. [He takes a moment to laugh at gravity.]

Eh...? But the animals you told me sound like two different animals were put together.

Mm, the closest I've ever done that was flying with Engi...maybe it'd be easier to try when I'm with someone I know.

You could say it that way, but I never see animals that are just one thing. Except the Earth King's bear. He was funny!

Is Engi a person or a kind of animal? I guess it does help when there's someone nearby - especially someone who can catch you!

Engi is...she's a very important friend to me. [How to explain dream demons] She's a person who came from a world where we dream. She's able to fly because she has these big wings!

She sounds really great! A world where you dream? That kinda sounds like the Spirit World, except that the spirits usually stay there. Your Engi reminds of my sky bison, Appa. He could fit a whole bunch of us on his back and take us to all kinds of places!

Oh, Engi can't leave the dream world either. She can only take physical form in the dream world. I wish she could wander freely outside that world though...

And it's a...flying bison? [She's imagining these huge wings on this bison to lift itself.] I would love to be able to meet Appa one day. Maybe the Malnosso might bring him here if you ask.

That stinks.

I can do that? I didn't know those Malnosso guys did requests. I would love to see Appa. We're supposed to always travel together. But what if he's safer back home?

Well, the Malnosso have given people their pets from home before, so I figured they'd do the same for Appa.

[...And Aang makes a point.] Ah, what do you know about this place so far?

[I have to keep in mind that this should be taking place before Katara and Sokka explain things to him in detail.]

Well from what I can see so far, a lot of different people have been taken here from different worlds and even different times. And it seems like a really nice place so far, but I keep hearing bad things about these Malnosso guys and danger. So I don't know if it would be better for someone to be here or back home.

The Malnosso are...what's the word, complicated. They'll do bad things but at the same time, they protect us from the Third Party. They want to destroy this place and everyone in it.

[...] Maybe if things are better at home, it might be a good idea idea Appa stayed there.

Yeah... you're probably right.
