Book 3: Fire of Rememory [Action / Accidental Voice]

[Action 1 - for Robin]

[The morning. Aang woke up in bed slowly as every memory he ever had filled his head, feeling fresh and vivid yet as if he had lived through it so long ago. And everything from his other life followed by the past week started trickling away. He remembered Robin, pizza, faint memories of a Batman and a butler. What were their names? He felt like he knew so... less. But some memories from the week stuck out. His friends... his real friends, all worried and hurt. There was one particular face that he kept seeing over and over again, each time accompanied by a twinge of inner pain. Now that he was himself again, viewing his memories of their meetings through his own mind, he could see every instance of pain and anguish in her face.

Katara.

His eyes were open. He quickly examined his surroundings. ...This was not his room at the Avatar House. Not a good start. Was he himself...? Aang grabbed his head for confirmation. He was bald. He was himself. But he was not in his room. Still, he decided to test the waters, or maybe he just felt like saying the name aloud in his own voice.]

Katara!

[Action 2 - for Avatar House (plus Winry?) / Accidental Voice]

[Aang sprinted from the community building towards House 56, enhancing his speed by bending the air behind him despite the relatively short distance. He came to a stop outside the door and steeled himself. His excitement burst through his body in the form of a cry - one which was caught by the journal.]

Guys! It's me, Aang! ...Avatar Aang! I'm back!

Yeah, it was horrible. Or it is horrible, to remember. I know it was Other Me, but I still feel tainted.

I felt that way the last time I ate a salad. Don't worry about it too much, you'll be fine.

Thanks Sokka. I'm really just glad everything's back to normal now. Normal for here, that is.

You're taking it with pretty impressive ease. My first experiment? I thought I was a firebender. Which... actually, I took it with ease too. Since I ended up building a flamethrower for it and that was pretty cool.

What can I say? We Airbenders have to be like leaves in the wind! [And not dwell too much on the darker half-memories still lurking in his brain.] ...You were a Firebender? Whoa, that sounds great! Why couldn't my experiment be something like that?

[Leaves in the wind... that sounds pretty lame. He always figured 'go against the flow' was the best way to live life. Don't just do things without thinking.]

I dunno, Aang, maybe it's because you can be a firebender all the time?

...Yeah, that makes sense. I guess I meant that... some of these experiments don't change everything about us?

[He nods.]

This one was one of the big ones, yeah. Sometimes the other ones are just... annoying more than anything. Like having your thoughts appear above your head or getting phony predictions about stuff that will happen to you.

Okay. So I just started off with a... pretty bad one. [He smirks.] But some are more like having an Aunt Wu in your head? Doesn't sound that bad. I'll take "annoying" over the other type any time.

[As long as I still know who I am.]

Right, which means next time an experiment comes around, you can square you shoulders, maybe roll your eyes, and talk about how it's no big deal this time around.

So... basically I'll act like you are right now!

You don't sound too enthusiastic about that.

It's just something to adjust to. No big problem.

[Impressive facial expression aside, Sokka is not feeling encouraged by it!]

If you say so. But if you want to talk about it, I've been experimented on more than anyone else in this house. [... not something to be proud of.]

Thanks, Sokka. I think I just need to settle back into the way things were. I don't... think I remember that much. [Then he addresses Sokka's own proclamation about experimentation] You never can catch a break, can you?

Aang, buddy? You have no idea. I could tell you stories. But some of them are pretty embarrassing. Though there was that time I was the Avatar. Two times, actually.

But... I'm the Avatar!

Well, yeah. That was like this experiment. A whole different life. Where I was the Avatar.

That must have been horrible.

Well, the control of all the elements part was pretty cool. But I was pretty much a jerk. A real selfish, inconsiderate jerk. [What a change, right.]

That's what happens with power. I know I let things go to my head sometimes... But good friends always help to keep things grounded.

Trust me. You're a good Avatar. The one I was... he was a jerk long before he had power like that.

That's a shame. The you I'm talking to now would make a much better Avatar. ...Compared to that one, that is.

I guess it's for the better that this happened here instead of back home, because now that I think about it... the previous Water Tribe Avatar, Avatar Kuruk, he wasn't really that responsible himself. And even though he did shape up later in his life, he still angered one of the spirits, Koh the Face Stealer, and that... didn't end well for him. At least you didn't have anything like that to deal with!

... that me kind of ended up starting a war that got his family killed and had half of the nations wanting to wipe out the Avatar line. So uh. I think maybe Water Tribe Avatars are just destined to screw up.

Oh. That's... not good. [He looks away a bit, wondering what that meant for that version of Katara, but he felt he'd rather not know.] ...I hope you're not right. Another Water Tribe Avatar should be next in the cycle.
