Time Period: After "The Promise: Part One"

History: Avatar Wikia
Personality: (Please consider here things such as habits, likes and dislikes, thought patterns, experiences and so on. This section should be fairly detailed!)

Aang is a compassionate, free-spirited young boy who generally loves fun and adventure. He treats most people in the same casual manner, except for elders and mentors whom he tries to address respectfully. Otherwise he fails at manners. Most of his favorite activities involve riding various types of animals. He is fairly impulsive and often likes to do whatever comes to mind. Aang does know when to get serious, except for some cases where the stress has overwhelmed him to the point where he has tried to run away from them or put off the decision as long as possible. As an air nomad, Aang is somewhat of a free spirit and was raised to respect all forms of life, so he is a strict vegetarian and will explore all alternatives to violence in solving problems. His Airbender upbringing, however, clashes with his responsibility as the Avatar, which requires that he put the world before all else and not being hesitant to take lives in order to preserve peace. Aang has adamantly adhered to his refusal to take another life in honor of his spiritual upbringing and the fact that he was just a child, so that is the one part of being the Avatar that he could never come to terms with.

As a child, Aang was initially reluctant to accept his duties as the Avatar, as the associated responsibilities threatened all of the fun of his idyllic existence as a normal 12 year old air nomad. His initial attempt at rebellion resulted in him waking up a century later to find all of his people were dead, so he slowly came to accept his fate as the Avatar. Aang has somewhat of a survivor's guilt from what has happened to the air tribe and has not fully processed the loss. He copes primarily by living in the moment, as an extension of his optimistic nature. He is optimistic to the point of naivete, although his experiences in the war have chipped away at his innocence to give him some more jaded world views. He will sometimes play up his childishness to prevent himself from facing uncomfortable certainties, such as his suggestion of "gluebending" as an alternative to the idea of killing the Fire Lord. He has a very goofy and immature sense of humor which is often shared with Sokka.

Friendship is an important part of Aang's nature. As an air nomad and the Avatar, he has freely befriended people from different nations, both in the past and the modern era. He fondly remembers friends from the Earth and Fire Nations, and although in the present he has made at least one friend from each nation, he has become uncomfortable around firebenders due to all of the pain they have caused, including their role in the genocide of his people. The friends that Aang does have, he prizes. He was brought up in a non-traditional manner which lacked familial roles. Gyatso was still somewhat of a father figure to him, the closest thing Aang had to siblings were his peers whom he was raised alongside. Friendship is therefore the foremost bond for Aang, and it has taken on new meaning for him in the era which he has awakened in. His friends' moral support and belief in him has helped Aang to live up to his responsibility while lowering his stress. Katara's belief in particular was a very powerful drive for Aang due to the feelings he developed for her over the course of the journey. It helped that his friends were around the same age as Aang, as it allowed him to be himself and have fun instead of having to be the Avatar all the time. It was a bit of a double-edged sword, as they enabled each other's procrastination from time to time (particularly prior to the coming of Sozin's Comet). By alternating between playing around with his friends and making serious plans with them about the war or training alongside them, Aang was developing a balance within himself which Gyatso had similarly tried to nurture in the past. Aang's trust in others did fluctuate and is most easily seen through the evolution of his friendship with Zuko. Even though Zuko was the prince of the nation that killed his people, Aang initially saw a friend in Zuko, a shadow of one childhood friend long gone. Zuko repaid Aang's attempts at friendship with fire, which made him more hardened towards the idea and distrustful of Zuko, even when Zuko tried to join their group much later. Zuko's genuine reformation and the accompanying awkwardness managed to win them over, and Aang's attitude soon became more trusting again.

Aang also has a strong attachment to the remnants of his past life and is still quite familiar with past cultures that have been forgotten. He is very wistful to everything and especially everyone he has lost, so he holds onto all he has left very tightly. Disturbing some surviving element of the Air Nomads is an easy way to quickly upset and anger the Avatar. His bison Appa has been his inseparable companion since he was six, and together they were the only survivors of the old air tribe. Momo also has a special place in Aang's heart due to having lived at the Southern Air Temple and being a sign that not all life at the air temple was wiped out. He treasures both dearly, and their endangerment can push Aang to the edge as easily as that of his human friends. This was particularly evident after Appa was captured, and Aang had to face the possibility that he was gone forever. This caused Aang to become moody towards everyone around him and act with a mix of depression and raw anger. The incident also made him protective of Momo, to the point where he violently attacked a buzzard wasp in retaliation for trying to take it. Aang's zen lifestyle makes it generally very difficult for him to become actually angry. In addition to anger at those who endanger his friends and those who commit atrocities, he has also felt anger towards his self whenever he has failed, especially in the aftermath of his kinda-death at Azula's hands. Aang became angry not only at his own failure as the Avatar and the resulting shame, but also at the idea of hiding his identity and depriving the world of the much-needed hope that came from the Avatar's existence.

Aang also has fear and guilt connected with his untapped power. This is especially true for the Avatar State, where Aang has had no control over his actions in the past. The Avatar State is almost the opposite of Aang's pacifistic nature in that it is destructive and exhibits no emotion besides a vengeful wratch. In one case, he wiped out dozens of Fire Nation soldiers (including the mutton-chopped Admiral Zhao) while in this form. Katara's emotional connection to Aang has pulled him out of the state time and time again, and Aang's guilt towards his actions was also suppressed by Katara reminding him that he had no control over himself. Many of Aang's emotional problems were balanced during his training under Guru Pathik, who taught him how to unlock his chakras by releasing certain associated emotions. The one he had trouble with was forsaking his earthly attachments, which were his feelings for Katara. It was a struggle for Aang, especially since he felt like his attachment to her was what kept him going on his journey. Aang at first chose Katara over the completion of his chakra training, only to give his feelings up later on in order to attempt to save her from Azula and the Dai Li. His only known controlled Avatar State was over almost as soon as it began due to Azula's fatal lightning strike. Aang has not been known to attempt a controlled Avatar State since then. Aang and Katara's relationship has had some complications. Aang saw her as his "forever girl" and his strongest emotional pillar during the most trying months of his life, even if at the same time he was distraught by the idea that she did not feel the same way. He felt anxious and impatient about Katara's indecision from time to time, but he ultimately respected her decision to wait to think over her feelings.

He has become a happier person over the year since the war's end, with the world facing a new era of peace and his feelings for Katara finally being requited with two becoming oogie-inducing "sweeties". With the genocidal dictator out of the picture and the world generally moving towards peace, Aang has been able to enjoy his role as the Avatar and is eager to participate in even the most mundane activities such as helping colonies of people to move, always with a smile on his face. The only threat to this peace, both in the world and in Aang's mind, has come from Zuko, who managed to get Aang to promise to kill him if he ever became Ozai. Aang once more had that moral dilemma to work through, but in a more difficult way due to it being his duty to his friend, and Zuko's troubling behavior threatening to invoke the promise.

Strengths:

Physical: Physically, Aang primarily relies on speed and agility with a variety of acrobatic moves such as flips at his disposal. This takes advantage of his light frame, and his movements are often advanced by his Airbending. He works out frequently, so he is exceptionally strong for someone so young. His strength is enough that he can make a tree tremble by punching it; he has also been able to lift Zuko while in flight, but he could barely support his weight. This is irrelevant to his combat performance, as Aang uses a fighting style which follows the monks' non-violent ways. It is primarily a defensive style which involves speedily dodging the opponent's attacks. When he has to attack using his bending, Aang usually goes for indirect attacks or ones that are not especially harmful, such as knocking an enemy over with a gust of wind or using earth to immobilize the enemy.

Aang's primary gift is his bending abilities. He knows all four types. First and foremost, Aang is a master of Airbending and the last practicer of the art. Airbending increases his mobility in multiple ways. He can use it to enhance his speed and run along walls, effectively cheating at parkour. There is even a technique which Aang invented, called the air scooter, where he creates a ball of wind that he can ride on. Aang usually wields a staff that acts as an instrument to help him conduct the winds for precise strikes on targets. The staff doubles as a collapsible glider which Aang can drift through the air on with the usage of his Airbending. He is highly skilled at the other three forms of bending, although not enough to be considered a master. Still, the fact that he was able to advance so far in the three styles over three-quarters of a year shows that Aang is a bit of a fast learner. This could easily be an effect of his status as the Avatar and his sharing a soul with many others who have learned the forms of bending. With each style, there is at least one advanced technique that he does not know. Waterbending is the first style that he learned and it is the only one that he studied under an experienced master for, at least initially. Aang uses water to attack fairly often, as it can knock down enemies better than air and in a non-lethal manner compared to the latter two styles. He became a skilled Earthbender under Toph's tutelage, and he was shown to cut loose when he was angry by forming jutting spires from the ground to wipe out a swarm of vulture hornets. When he is collected, Aang will usually use Earthbending in more defensive ways, to create protective walls as well as makeshift armor for himself. Firebending was the last one which Aang learned and the one which he spent the least amount of time practicing. He did have an early yet very brief lesson under the master Jeong-Jeong, and his true master was Zuko himself. Aang and Zuko were able to learn together from the Firebending Masters about the true art of Firebending.

One other power Aang has is the Avatar State. This is triggered in moments of extreme stress, usually when Aang's anger is pushed, and/or his loved ones' lives are directly endangered. The Avatar State channels pure cosmic energy with the knowledge of all of the lives of the previous Avatars. It is like the wrath of God for this universe. Aang can take on powers of other spirits in this form, as seen when the ocean spirit gave Aang his power, which caused him to be covered in a watery mass during his following rampage. Aang is capable of great destruction in this form, often without regard for human life, and he reverts to normal once he has calmed down. This has most readily been accomplished by Katara's nurturing presence. Aang can willingly invoke the Avatar State and control it only at times when he has opened all seven of his chakras. He has only entered the controlled version once so far, and it did not go well to say the least.

Aang also has a strong connection to the Spirit World. He can commune with other spirits and astrally project himself into the Spirit World for surreal adventures. This ability also connects Aang to the souls of his previous incarnations and allows him to communicate with them for information, with his primary guide being Roku. Aang has also learned the lost art of energybending, where one bends another's life force, which can cut one off from the very ability to bend. Aang only used it once, shortly after he learned it and in an extreme circumstance, to remove Ozai's bending abilities and remove the threat he posed. Due to the difficulties associated with this technique, it is unlikely he will try it again.

Mental: He does not plan things out thoroughly, but he is good at thinking on the fly and finding unconventional ways to overcome enemies. Aang is at his best when he fights with a clear mind. This helps him to feed into his non-offensive style and overcome enemies by turning their attacks back at them. Once, he was able to enrage Zhao into burning down his own ships by easily picking apart his insecurities and deftly dodging his moves. As the Avatar, he also likes to think of compromises as a solution to a problem to avoid fighting. This can be seen in his attempt to guide two bickering tribes through the Great Divide and in his attempt to delegate the negotiations between the Fire and Earth Nations following the war. His knowledge of forgotten cultures and traditions has also occasionally been helpful in solving problems in their travels (or just throwing raves in Fire Nation caves), and in a non-fighting context could be helpful in cultural reconstructions.

Emotional: Aang has a very happy and upbeat attitude which has helped him to carry and/or conceal many of his burdens. He is also quite open-minded and outgoing. He does not judge his friends for having different values or diets (the latter only leading to occasional misunderstandings at Sokka's expense). He is also very close to and protective of his friends, who have acted as invaluable emotional pillars for him in his journey, and he is always eager to forge new friendships as well. Aang also seeks balance, both in himself and in the world, to the point where he will often try to please everyone. He will also do so peacefully, with a forgiving and non-violent nature. Although Aang has been somewhat hardened by his experiences, he still remains primarily innocent and pure, as shown in his "unbendable" soul.

Weaknesses:

Physical: Aang's physical combat prowess applies primarily to defensive moves and moves that enhance his bending, so bending aside, he is poor at direct physical combat. If Aang is actually hit, he can be tossed around fairly easily. Additionally, he has a scar on his back which is connected to a chakra path and is particularly sensitive. His chakra flows free there now following his battle with Ozai, but the scar still remains as a potential weak point. In regards to bending, although Aang is a master of airbending, he has not fully mastered the other forms. Neither Zuko nor Toph were fully satisfied with his firebending or earthbending skills prior to the final battle, and there were advanced moves for each element such as shooting lightning and metalbending that he never learned.

Mental: Aang is still young and despite the experiences he has gone through, he is still not a very advanced intellect. It does not help that he is time-displaced, although he has not faced much problem adapting to contemporary life aside from his missing age-old traditions. Aang is also pretty lousy at manners despite treating others respectfully. Aang's straightforward method of thinking also causes him to miss subtleties, which can cause his compromises to fall through. This is evident in the conflict of The Promise, where the attempts at negotiations are thwarted by the complications involving the fire nation colonies, but Aang refuses to see past a black-and-white view of the four nations needing to be balanced. His quick wit does not always work out either, and especially when he does not have strategies backing him such as that of Sokka, he can be tricked by the enemy. Additionally, Aang's youth and immaturity naturally made him more likely to distract from the real problems with attempts at having fun.

Emotional: One of Aang's greatest enemies has always been stress, as facing the magnitude of his duty has sometimes caused him to be overwhelmed. His responses will usually involve overtaxing himself to try to accomplish his task and messing up (such as prior to the Day of Black Sun) or by lashing out and trying to run and hide (such as back after he first found out about being the Avatar, as well as prior to the coming of Sozin's Comet). He is also sometimes weighed down by the guilt he bears for the problems arising both in his absence and as a consequences of the actions he does take. Aang's attachment to his friends does also border on neediness at times and has occasionally bred petty behavior. When faced with the idea of losing Sokka and Katara, he lied and hid a message from their father so that they would not be tempted to leave, and these actions only wound up influencing them to temporarily part ways once he was discovered. Anger in general will often cause Aang to act more irrational and in extreme cases can give him fits where he is extremely spiteful towards his usually beloved friends (two words: The Desert). And despite his closeness to his friends, he mostly sees surface emotions and can overlook the depths of one's troubles.

First Person: (This was almost his intro post, but it seemed more in character for Aang to shout into a video screen.)

Hey... everybody? I'm Aang, an Airbender. I don't really know what I'm doing where or where my friends and sky bison have gone. Have you... book people seen anyone I know anywhere?

I think I like this place though. It's really nice even if feels so strange. My bending doesn't feel right either. Am I just out of practice? Toph won't be happy. So what do people do for fun around here? I'm getting a little bored already.

Oh yeah, there's just one more thing that's bothering. Have I... always had wings?

Third Person: (This could be considered as Aang's actual entrance into Luceti, although I omitted any mention of the journal)

The unfamiliar chirping of birds should have probably been the first sign that something was not right. The second was that either Appa's back had gotten much tougher and dirtier, or Aang was lying on bare ground. Once his eyes slowly opened, he examined his surroundings. Ignoring the dull pain in his back, he saw an environment that was wholly unfamiliar, even if the actual features were fairly normal.

Aang kicked up some air as he jumped to his feet and examined his surroundings. No Appa. No Katara. No Toph, Momo, Sokka or anyone. He definitely was not anywhere near the Earth King's palace either. What was this place? Why was he holding the air as if it were his staff? Also, where did his staff go? Aang saw some houses in the distance and sprinted towards them, as usual bending the air around him to augment his running speed while wondering if to get people to talk he would have to play the Avatar card. The air was fresh, at least. He opened his mouth in a wide grin and let the wind wash down to his lungs. He felt a renewing sensation that assuaged his creeping concerns regarding his friends' whereabouts.

So he diverted his path and felt content to take a few moments to run through the field, giggling in contentment. It took a while for him to notice that his feet weren't landing on the ground with every step, and it was not due to any Airbending. Aang came to a halt and addressed the pain on his back. It could not be his scar, which never really hurt as long as it was left alone. He then felt some air lightly blowing on his face, coming from directly behind him. Aang apprehensively reached over his shoulder towards the source of the gust and soon grasped something feathery. This caused an instant realization that this was part of his own body. Wings? He began to wonder. "But I'm a human. I'm... pretty sure," he muttered to himself as mulled over some facts. He couldn't remember the last time he looked in any reflective surface, he was a prodigy Airbender and no one had told him he WASN'T a bird-human before.

Aang did not dwell on this possible answer for long, as his mind soon settled on a new question which renewed his grin: "What's the most fun thing I can do with these wings?"
